The UWI Congratulates Professor Dale Webber on his appointment as Special Envoy on Climate Change

The UWI Mona sends warm congratulations and is pleased to share the news that Professor Dale Webber has been appointed as Jamaica’s first Special Envoy for Climate Change, the Environment, matters of the Ocean, and the Blue Economy. This prestigious role reflects, not only, Professor Webber’s exemplary career as a marine biologist and conservationist but also his outstanding contributions to academia, public service, and environmental stewardship.

Professor Webber’s distinguished background, including over 15 years of experience as a Coastal Ecologist and his leadership at The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona Campus, has had a profound impact on both our academic community and the broader environmental policy landscape. His research, particularly in areas such as coastal water quality, marine pollution, and sustainable development, has been instrumental in shaping national and regional policies, including the Jamaican Government's approach to environmental management.

Throughout his career, Professor Webber has supervised over 20 Masters and five PhD students, and has published over 40 papers on vital issues related to marine and coastal ecosystems. His involvement in policy-making through his work with the Natural Resource Conservation Authority and as Chairman of the National Ramsar Committee has been a cornerstone in advancing Jamaica's wetland management efforts.

In this new role, Professor Webber will serve as Jamaica's Ambassador for climate change and environmental matters, directly reporting to Prime Minister Andrew Holness and working closely with the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and other key stakeholders. We have every confidence that he will bring the same level of dedication, expertise, and leadership to this important national and global endeavor as he has throughout his distinguished career.
The UWI proudly congratulates Professor Webber on this achievement and we look forward to seeing the continued positive impact he will have in this capacity both locally and regionally.
