
The Hugh Wynter Institute for Reproductive Health and Endoscopic Surgery (HWI-RHES) at The University of The West Indies (UWI), Mona, celebrates graduate student Treka Lewis' national recognition.
Lewis, is a current M.Sc. Counselling student at HWI-RHES, who had received the Order of Distinction (OD) for her outstanding contributions to National Poor Relief Services and Community Development during the Jamaica National Awards Ceremony on October 21st, 2024.
"This recognition exemplifies the high caliber of our counselling students," said Professor Minerva Thame, Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences. Professor Thame emphasized The UWI's tradition of excellence, in fostering an environment that equips students with academic knowledge and the skills to contribute to social change.
Dr. John Harriott, Director of HWI-RHES, commended Lewis, highlighting her embodiment of a compassionate human services professional. As state in her motto, "Well done is better than well said," reflects her passion for service.
Professor Marcia Roye, Director of Graduate Studies and Research, admired Lewis' achievements, noting that her commitment to community engagement and empowerment aligns well with The UWI's core values. The Professor further emphasized Lewis' inspiration, demonstrating the potential for everyone to contribute to national development. Professor Roye encourages students during their academic journey, to embrace community involvement for strengthening both individual and societal progress.
Lewis' research on homelessness reinforces her dedication to marginalized communities. Notably, she excels as both a graduate student and the Corporate Secretary of the Board of Supervision in the Ministry of Local Government and Community Development. Lewis' remarkable achievements truly exemplify The UWI's commitment to graduates whose training helps to uplift the nation.
