Dear Students and Staff,
The administration of the campus understands and appreciates the anxiety expressed by our students over the last few days in relation to incidents of robbery on the campus. We wish to assure the entire campus community that the security of the campus is of paramount importance. We further want to assure that while we understand the fears generated by these recent occurrences, the campus remains a relatively safe space based on the number of incidents reported on a semester-by-semester basis.
We continuously review our security operations on an ongoing bases through our monthly Campus Security Committee meetings which includes representatives from various stakeholder groups. Notwithstanding this, based on the heightened concerns expressed in recent days, we have engaged with our Guild of Students and following those engagements we will be implementing the following enhanced security measures starting Monday, February 17, 2025:
New Security Measures:
- We are enforcing the requirements that students and staff wear their IDs at all times as they will be subject to random checks by our security team.
- Designated Restricted Access at Queens Way & Hospital Gates: Only staff and students with valid UWI IDs will be granted entry through these gates.
- Designated General Access Points: Visitors, concessionaires, and public transportation vehicles will be limited to the Irvine Hall gate (back gate) and Post Office gate, with screening protocols in place.
- Increased Security at Pedestrian Entrances: Security presence will be significantly bolstered at all main pedestrian entry and exit points.
- Enhanced Patrols: Security teams, including Campus Police, King Alarm Security, and the Mona Police, will increase patrols, particularly in high-traffic areas and routes frequently used by students.
- Support for Evening Students: To ensure the safe movement of students attending evening classes, additional security patrols will be provided.
- Technology-Driven Monitoring: The University will continue to enhance its technological security measures including real-time camera monitoring at main gates.
