Rise in Local Covid-19 Cases

16 August, 2024

As we approach a new academic year and with recent developments considered, The UWI would like to encourage everyone to be informed and prepared regarding the rising cases of COVID-19 and other respiratory illnesses.
Here are some key points and guidelines to help minimize the risk of infection and manage your health effectively:
Precautionary Measures:
• Wear Masks: We encourage you to wear masks and follow other COVID-19 precautions, especially if you are experiencing symptoms similar to the flu or if you suspect potential exposure.
• Health Monitoring: If you feel unwell or show symptoms of respiratory illness, please stay at home and seek medical advice promptly. Contact a Doctor, the University Health Centre or use a self-test as soon as possible.
Increased Risk Factors:
• There is a heightened risk of COVID-19 and other influenza-like illnesses due to in-creased travel during the summer vacation, post events such as the Emancipation/ In-dependence celebrations, the Olympics, and the return to campus for the new academic year. Please be vigilant and take appropriate precautions.
Testing:
• Combined COVID/Influenza A/B test kits are available at the University Health Centre for JMD $2700. Utilizing these tests can help in identifying and managing symptoms ear-ly.
Vaccination:
• The COVID-19 vaccine remains a recommended precaution, particularly for certain groups. Consider your own health and the well-being of your loved ones at home. For detailed information, please refer to PAHO infographics.( https://www.paho.org/en/documents/infographic-update-who-recommendations...)
• Vaccines are available for free at the MAWC from Tuesday to Thursday, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m., and at specific public health centres and doctors' offices.
Reliable Information:
• Please ensure that you are sourcing information about COVID-19 from reliable and credible sources. There is an increase in misinformation, and it is crucial to rely on ac-curate data. Please check the World Health Organization (WHO) for global information (https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019 ) or MOHW web-sites for local information. We appreciate your cooperation and diligence in following these guidelines. By staying in-formed and taking necessary precautions, we can collectively help reduce the spread of COVID-19 and protect our university community and loved ones at home.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
