Pelicans Soar!

Sport is an important aspect of the holistic development of our students and we are proud that our students perform just as well in their sporting pursuits on the local and global stage as they do in their academic pursuits. Through the Mona Academy of Sport, Athletics Development and Training division, we offer a wide range of recreational, intramural and competitive sporting options for our students. The UWI Mona Bowl is home to all but one (hockey) sporting facilities at The UWI Mona Campus and include world-class sporting facilities such as an Olympic-sized swimming pool, regupol track and an astro turf football pitch.

 Student athletes also have access to our state of the art sports medicine facilities that help them achieve their highest potential in their respective sporting disciplines. Our student athletes compete in local competitions, the multi-sport biennial UWI Games, which sees all the campuses of The UWI competing for championship title; and also other regional and international competitions to include the Olympics. Sporting options at The UWI Mona include:

Recreational Sport – Swimming | Lawn Tennis

Students, staff and alumni have access to the swimming pool and tennis courts for recreational purposes, free of charge for students Monday-Friday 12:00 noon-1:00 pm and Friday 6:00 pm-7:00 pm; but there is a fee for staff and alumni (please see the links below in DOWNLOADS for schedule and price list). There is also a tennis clinic for beginners who have an interest in learning to play and similar opportunities to learn to swim. Theatre Evenings and Weekly Lunch Hour Concerts – Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts (PSCCA)

Lights, Camera, Action!

The PSCCA is the home of the creative arts at The UWI Mona Campus. The centre comprises of a 250 seat theatre, dance studio and music room. Performances range from student and University productions as well as popular local, regional and international artists and performing groups. There is never a dull moment at the PSCCA, so whether you want to watch a play, rock to a pop band, be soothed by an orchestra or sing along with the acclaimed University Singers, there is so much you can explore. Your UWI Mona experience is not complete without attending at least one event at our ‘home theatre’. Students, staff, alumni and the general public are welcome. UWI Mona Moves – Outdoor fitness Classes

Whether you have a fitness goal or you just enjoy being active, this outdoor exercise programme will keep you in top shape. UWI Mona Moves sessions involves walking, core and full body work. UWI Mona Moves is open to staff, students, alumni.

Run/Walk on Campus

Enjoy a scenic early morning or evening run on our beautiful campus. We welcome members of our University community and their families as well as the general public to use our expansive campus to keep minds as well as bodies healthy. Popular areas to go for a run/walk include Ring Road and the UWI Mona Bowl. While you achieve your daily fitness and exercise goals, you are one step closer to being fully prepared for our annual 5k road race – the CB Group UWI 5K and Smart Eggs Kids K which is a 1K road race for children. Run/Walk for a worthy cause.

Off Campus Recreation

The UWI Beach at Lyssons St. Thomas

Study. Work. Beach. Repeat

Enjoy a day trip with your friends or family to the beautiful exclusive UWI beach property in Lyssons, St Thomas. The property is accessible only to UWI students, staff, alumni and their guests. Your UWI identification card (students and staff) along with your pass will be required for entry.

Students’ entry is free with UWI ID, however there is a fee of $150 per guest. Each student is allowed up to 5 guests per visit.

Staff annual fee is $3,000.00 and allows the staff member up to 6 guests per visit

Alumni annual fee is $5,000 and allows the alumni member up to 6 guests per visit

Payments should be made at the UWI Mona Bursary Cashier after which passes will be issued.

Cardiff Hall House (University House)

Cardiff Hall, St Ann

The University House in Cardiff Hall, St Ann is a cosy 3 bedroom villa with a swimming pool, located in the heart of Runaway Bay and is owned by The University of the West Indies. It was built in 1962 for Sir William Arthur Lewis, then Vice Chancellor of the University and is said to have been a stopover for Dr. Martin Luther King on his first visit to Jamaica in 1965. The property is ideal for a weekend getaway or longer retreats and is open to staff, students, alumni and other affiliates of the University.

Boat Tours - Port Royal Marine Laboratory

Take a study break with a leisurely morning boat tour of the mangroves located in Port Royal. This educational tour examines the importance of the mangrove ecosystem, types of mangroves, diversity and threats to the mangroves. In addition to learning about your environment, you will also enjoy the beautiful vistas of the Kingston Harbour. Tours are open to students, staff, alumni, schools and interested members of the public. Each boat trip is $15,000.00 with a maximum of 7 people allowed per trip. Boat Tours, Snorkelling, Diving – Discovery Bay Marine Laboratory

The Discovery Bay Marine Laboratory is located in Western Jamaica in the parish of St. Ann and is easily accessible from both our UWI Mona Western Jamaica Campus located in Montego Bay and main campus in Kingston. Although a popular location for coastal and oceanic research, this UWI Mona site welcomes students, staff and alumni for relaxing day tours or extended stays as both private and shared accommodation facilities are available on property. Recreational options include boat tours, snorkelling and diving. Discovery Bay has a wide range of dive sites, whether you are a novice seeing the coral reefs for the first time, or are an experienced coral reef biologist. Prospective divers must possess certification from a recognized agency, have completed a dive medical within the last 12 months and may be required to demonstrate their diving skills in a checkout dive.
