Health and Wellness

University Health Centre

The health, safety and well-being of our students and staff is top priority.

The University Health Centre (UHC) at The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, provides a wide range of primary health care services in relations to your physical (including oral health), mental and emotional well-being. These services are available to members of the University community to include students, staff and staff dependants, retirees and their spouses. Our fully licensed medical, dental and counselling practitioners are attuned to the everyday demands of work, and the stress and rigour of student/staff life, therefore providing a suite of services to support the needs of all our students and staff. A student or staff ID is required for each visit to the health centre.

We have an appointment system for non-urgent care. Please make appointments for medical, mental health and dental care that does not require immediate attention. For urgent care, screening is done upon entry to the UHC to determine the severity of your condition. This allows very ill patients to see a doctor within minutes of coming to the Health Centre.

Confidentiality

All visits to the University Health Centre are treated confidentially. The UHC will not disclose details of your condition to any third party without your consent. Details will only be shared with a health provider of your choice.

Services Offered at the University Health Centre

Health Insurance

The UWI provides health insurance for our students, staff and staff dependants to reduce health-related risks, allowing for access to affordable and reliable healthcare services.

All registered students (full-time and part-time) become eligible for the University’s mandatory health insurance plan and are issued health cards at the start of each academic year. Medical, mental health and dental services and prescription drugs can be accessed at the University Health Centre once their miscellaneous fees are paid. Telemedicine service may also be covered under the insurance for medical and counselling services.

As with all health insurance plans, there are limitations to what is covered, especially as it relates to prescription drugs. Students are encouraged to seek supplemental health insurance, for example, through the National Health Fund (NHF) for further coverage for specific underlying health conditions if deemed necessary.

Staff members pay premiums based on the option chosen from the following plans:

  • Employee Only
  • Employee + One Dependent
  • Employee + Multiple Dependents

The premium for staff is subsidized by the University with staff paying the difference through payroll deductions which are done monthly. For more information on the insurance plan and benefits, please contact the Human Resource Management Division (HRMD).

Location

The Health Centre is located at 11 Gibraltar Camp Way, Mona Campus across from the Hugh Lawson Shearer Centre (Social Welfare Training Centre) or beside The UWI School of Nursing.
