After a three-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Faculty of Medical Sciences at The University of the West Indies (The UWI) Mona, will be hosting its 29th Annual Research Conference and Workshops (FMS-ARC) from November 22 - 24, 2023.
The highly anticipated Conference will be hosted in the Main Medical Lecture Theatre at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI). This 29th Conference will explore and celebrate the evolution and revolution of the Faculty in its capacity of teaching and research.
As The UWI celebrates its 75th Anniversary, Faculty of Medical Sciences (formally the Faculty of Medicine) will also celebrate as it was the very first faculty in The UWI, being established in October 1948. The progressive growth and evolution of the Faculty can be felt across the world as graduates of its undergraduate and post-graduate programmes are employed across the globe. Revolutionary changes have led to the growth of the Faculty as it has expanded its offerings of undergraduate and graduate level programmes, improved research output and embraced social accountability, equity, diversity and inclusion.
The three-day Conference will feature local and international guest speakers to include: Dr. Winston De La Haye from UHWI, Jamaican-born Prof. Camille Ragin from the Fox Chase Cancer Center, Philadelphia, PA., and Prof. James Collins Calcaño, from the School of Dentistry, Pontificia Universidad Catolica Madre y Maestra, Dominican Republic. The speakers will take participants on a reflective journey to explore matters related to mental health and the health care worker, cancer research and the connection between periodontal disease, and chronic medical conditions. They will remind us of our human capacity and the value of technology in changing the course of future developments in the medical care of our patients. We will be charged to find the will, and to make a difference to facilitate the continued development of the Faculty of Medical Sciences through quality research and innovative ways to educate our students.
The Conference will provide opportunities for attendees to be exposed to current research, and to network and create alliances with other colleagues. Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits will be available to attendees on request.
