FST grad student appointed to DOSI Advisory Board

Ms. Leneka Rhoden, a Master of Philosophy student  in Environmental Biology from the Department of Life Sciences, Faculty of Science and Technology, has been appointed to the Deep-Ocean Stewardship Initiative (DOSI) Advisory Board. This appointment, effective April 2024, underscores The University's commitment to fostering global leadership in marine science and environmental sustainability.

DOSI is a global network of experts which integrates science, technology, policy, law, and economics to advise on ecosystem-based management of resource use in the deep ocean, and on strategies to maintain the integrity of deep-ocean ecosystems within and beyond national jurisdiction. The DOSI Advisory Board plays a crucial role in guiding the strategic direction and activities of DOSI, with a focus on promoting science in deep-ocean on an international scale.

As a member of the DOSI Advisory Board, Leneka will be involved in providing strategic advice, promoting DOSI's aims and principles, representing DOSI at relevant meetings and discussions, and supporting fundraising and partnership development efforts.

"The Department of Life Sciences congratulates Ms. Leneka Rhoden in her appointment to the Deep Ocean Stewardship Initiative (DOSI) advisory board," said Professor Mona Webber, Head Department of Life Sciences, Faculty of Science and Technology, The UWI, Mona. "This is a critical area that has importance for sustainable and equitable use of these vast and emerging resources.  We are confident that with her skills, experience and enthusiasm, Leneka will make an invaluable contribution in this area," Professor Webber added.

"As the youngest appointee to the board of the DOSI, I am eager about the opportunity to collaborate with the 300 global scientists and experts spanning the UK and beyond, working to advance task forces aimed at ocean biodiversity, climate change, and offshore energy," Leneka said.  "This appointment is a testament to my dedication to climate advocacy and promises to significantly contribute to my professional advancement."
