Five (5) extraordinary Pelicans are preparing to deliver messages of hard work, perseverance and ‘Pelican Pride’ when they address The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus’ five (5) graduation ceremonies scheduled for October 31 to November 2, 2024.

The class of 2024 valedictorians are: Saran Ffrench from the Faculty of Social Sciences (The Mona School of Business and Management); Britney Hay from the Faculty of Medical Sciences; Candace Ramsay from the Faculty of Humanities and Education; Serene Shirley from the Faculty of Engineering and Nathan Walker from the Faculty of Social Sciences. These students not only excelled in their studies, they also excelled in their communities beyond the campus and intend to continue to serve as a beacon of light and source of inspiration for their peers and the nation. They will represent their faculties as Class Valedictorians for The UWI Mona’s Graduating Class of 2024.

This year's series of graduation ceremonies is themed Celebrating Caribbean Legacy: A Kaleidoscope of Resilience. In addition to the graduation of the Class of 2024, the ceremonies will mark some important firsts. Chancellor Dr. The Most Honourable Dodridge D. Miller, a distinguished UWI alumni himself, who took the highest office as The UWI's 7th Chancellor in August, is presiding for the first time, and new, redesigned academic regalia (gowns) are being unveiled.

The valedictorians will address each ceremony as follows:

1. Thursday, October 31, 2024 @ 4 P.M. | Valedictorian: Britney Hay (B Sc. Nursing)

2. Friday, November 1, 2024 @ 10 A.M. | Valedictorian: Nathan Walker (BSc. Economics)
Faculty of Social Sciences (Except MSBM) & Institute of Gender and Development Studies.

3. Friday, November 1, 2024 @ 4 P.M. | Valedictorian: Serene Shirley (BSc. Biomedical Engineering)
Faculty of Science and Technology & Faculty of Engineering.

4. Saturday November 2, 2024 @ 10 A.M.| Valedictorian: Candace Ramsay (BA Integrated Marketing Communication)
Faculty of Humanities and Education and Faculty of Law

5. Saturday November 2, 2024 @ 4 P.M.| Valedictorian: Saran Ffrench (BSc Human Resource Management)
Faculty of Social Sciences (MSBM only)

Valedictorians represent some of the best of The UWI Mona’s graduating class. Each year, nominees are selected on academic performance, involvement in extra and co-curricular activities. The Selection Committee looks for graduates who are critical thinkers, good communicators, versed in technology, strong in their Caribbean identity, and guided by their ethics and values.
