The University of the West Indies Mona has signed an Agreement with the National Commercial Bank Foundation (NCBF) to increase the number of STEM teachers in Jamaica focused on Digital Studies via the Build Out Our Stem Teachers (BOOST) Programme.

The Agreement was signed on July 28, 2022 in the Principal’s Conference Room on The UWI Mona Campus.

Nine Jamaican women across the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) were acknowledged and awarded plaques by the Scientific Research Council (SRC) at its inaugural Science and Technology XXtrordineers Recognition Programme on Thursday at the Terra Nova Hotel in St Andrew.

According to Executive Director, Dr Charah Watson, the S&T XXtrordineers Recognition Programme is an effort by the SRC to raise awareness about STEM and inspire participation among youngsters in the fields.

Professor Christine Carrington, Professor of Molecular Genetics and Virology in the Faculty of Medical Sciences at The University of the West Indies (The UWI) St. Augustine Campus has officially been presented with her award as the 2022 Anthony N Sabga Caribbean Excellence Laureate for Science and Technology. She received the award from President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, Paula Mae Weekes in a ceremony on June 14, 2022 at President's House in Port of Spain.

As a result, there is an urgent need to find simple ways to solve and present complicated mathematical problems. A University of the West Indies team of scientists and international collaborators have conducted an interdisciplinary study that found that there are potentially beneficial medicinal properties in a favorite Caribbean fruit - guinep. The study was published in the highly respected Nature Research Journal Scientific Reports.
